I must protest at the BBC's irresponsible decision to run a movie and a radio version this Holiday Monday of an exceptionally dangerous book, with themes which are completely opposed to the national interest. The eponymous figure is clearly a ‘Non Dom’, with bogus documents, who on arrival eliminates in the most grotesque manner a number of law-abiding, tax-paying citizens whom she believes may block her own path to power. She flies in and out of the country for short periods, with an irresponsible and feckless approach to work and causing all manner of disturbances in the process, some of it apparently festering in a ‘diplomatic’ black bag, and centering on a seemingly blameless ‘sleeper’ family in London.
Another key figure, linked over many years in all manner of dubious activities with the 'heroine’ of the piece, is someone who – from his very strange accent and peculiar dialect - is clearly an illegal immigrant. He is characterised as a sympathetic, even exploited figure, but of course is sly and cunning as he goads all those who come into contact him into outrageous, anti-social and even criminal behaviour. This alone is likely to increase prejudice and possibly trigger violent behaviour to others sporting strange head-gear and accents. During the day-time he produces what are clearly drug-induced mass delusions on adults and children alike as they ‘disappear‘ through some street paintings, believing cartoon-ish animals are talking to them. At other times he ‘works’ in the black economy in every sense, but this also leads to weird singing and dancing rituals on London’s rooftops. On another occasion, he cruelly and for his evident mirth, exploits the dementia of an elderly relative of the family, who he leaves confused and in a highly dangerous state, literally not knowing which is the floor and which the ceiling.
Worst of all is the evident corruption and lack of any moral sense of the two children in the narrative; both are groomed to exploit a vulnerable and homeless woman, who is spied on via the ‘capture’ of CCTV cameras on a weird video display system. This is in order to engender an infestation of pigeons (possibly also planted with drugs) around the national symbol and obvious terrorism target, St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Finally, and almost unbelievably on a public service national broadcaster given our current circumstances, one of the children causes a run on a bank, triggering widespread financial panic, and then goads his father – his own father! - to give up on a highly important job in the said bank so that he can “go fly a kite”; clearly a euphemism for more psychotic behaviour - also, needless to say, involving the drug-dealing illegal immigrant. While all this happens, with a veritable two-fingers to the Prevention of Terrorism Act and without regard to public safety, the mother of the family marches on parliament with numerous other members of a violent sect, intent on the overthrow of the government.
I am all in favour of speech and artistic expression but this has to be allied to the protection of the public interest – and for this reason I call for this double-performance of Mary Poppins to be stopped.
I hear they're also making a movie version of the story of one of the most notorious illegal immigrants ever to seek asylum on these shores. They should have put him and his marmalade sandwiches on the first boat back to Peru...
